The Mid-Maryland USBC is honored to induct Edna Mercer into the inaugural 2014-2015 bowling season Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service. For all she has done to grow and enhance the sport of bowling.
Edna Mercer had been a fixture at Terrace Lanes in Frederick and a member of the FWBA USBC for many years. Unfortunately Edna passed away on September 22, 2014. Before Edna passed away she spent a lot of her time involved in the FWBA.
Edna held multiple positions over her years on the board of directors. While Edna never served as President or Vice President her other positions are impressive. Edna first joined the FWBA Board of Directors in the late 60’s. It is believed Edna was on the board from the time it formed until her death. Her initial position on the board was as a director. She held that position for nearly 16 years. In the early years of the board of directors, there was not an Association Manager. That position was held separately by an Association Secretary and an Association Treasurer. Edna was the Association Treasurer from 1985 until 1995. In 1995 those positions were combined into the Association Manager. Edna held that position until she resigned from the position in 2009. At that point she had been on the board of directors for 40 years. 40 years may seem like a long time to many of us, but to Edna it was not enough. Upon resigning as Association Manager Edna was elected as Sargent of Arms for the association. A position she continued to hold until her passing. In additions to these positions Edna held on the board, she was also committee chair for the local awards, and tournament director. Additionally, Edna was involved in the smooth running of State Bowling tournaments that the local association hosted.
Not only was Edna a long time member of the board of directors, she was involved in leagues at Terrace Lanes. She was secretary/treasurer for the Early Birds for many years until she stopped bowling after a stroke in the early 2000’s. In addition to the Early Birds, she was secretary/treasurer for 2 evening ladies leagues that Terrace Lanes used to have, Thursdays Woman’s and Tuesday Twilights.
Serving the local bowling association was not all that Edna did to further the sport of bowling. Edna also served as a Stat and National Delegate. Edna loved the sport of bowling even after she was unable to bowl due to her health. She was involved in every local tournament hosted by the association and was present at a local tournament the day before she passed.
Edna may have passed away but she will always be part of the local association. Not only did she assist in every local tournament, selling 50/50 tickets and helping with fundraising was something Edna was more than happy doing. She held an integral part of the local awards program for the ladies for many years. She maintained all stock and ordered as needed. Edna always made sure that anyone who earned an award received one.
Edna was always a tireless worker for the association and could be counted on by every secretary in any league that had a question or problem. The success of the FWBA can be contributed to Edna and people like her for without such persons no event or undertaking would ever be a success.
Again, it is our privilege to induct Edna Mercer into the Mid-Maryland USBC Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service.
